About a week ago, I started to notice something weird happening whenever I typed accented letters in Spanish. For example, if I tried to type the name “María”, it would be displaying as “Mar’’ia”. This had never occurred throughout the two+ years I’ve used the computer. I thought that somehow my keyboard had been set to a default-like state by accident, but it turns out that it was not an input issue. The language setting was correct, but noticed something else just as odd.
My Google Chrome browser had an additional extension called “YMovieFlow” and it didn’t seem like anything I remember installing, so I deleted it from the app. As I opened Chrome again, the extension that was supposed to be gone came back immediately with an additional search window. This is when I decided to look up these symptoms my PC had at the time, and every single one matched with detailed forums explaining this keylogger virus designed to steal crucial information (passwords, online banking info, etc.). Upon reading all this dreadful information, I looked up a page with steps to remove these malicious, hidden programs and surprisingly it worked after a couple hours. No more unaccented words and the suspicious Chrome extension never returned.
Any suggestions on what else I should do after apparently removing this virus? Obviously, the first thing I’m considering is to change all my crucial passwords to prevent these cyber criminals from accessing my accounts. I would like to hear what else I can do to keep my information safe.
